Detailed Description:

Position: Police Officer
Department: Police
Responsible to: Police Chief
Pay Grade: As negotiated
GENERAL NATURE OF WORK

The Police Officer works an assigned shift and is responsible to complete police patrols, conduct traffic regulatory activities, participate in community policing activities, conduct property checks, respond to calls from dispatch, initiate self directed patrols, assist in special enforcement activities, attend training and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police and the Sergeant. The Police Officer is given specific work instructions assignments by the Chief of Police and or Sergeant but usually works independently in performing regularly assigned duties. Work is reviewed by inspection, through oral and written reports, and by results obtained.

Essential Functions:
· Responds as dispatched to Police, Fire and accident calls
· Performs traffic control work;
· Serves as witness in Court when involved in the case being heard;
· Maintains records and prepares reports;
· Performs public relations and patrol related work as required;
· Conducts foot patrols and business visits
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Good knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department, good knowledge of modern police methods and procedures; good knowledge of pertinent Federal and State laws and of town ordinances; good knowledge of the geography of the town and the location of important buildings; good knowledge of first-aid principles and practices and skill in their application; skill in the use of firearms; ability to analyze problems and adopt an effective course of action; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to prepare clear and comprehensive written reports; ability to deal firmly and tactfully the general public; and good physical condition.

Education and Experience:
Required: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have current Law Enforcement Certification, meet Commonwealth of Virginia mandated in-service training requirements, and possess a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Preferred: In addition to the above requirements the candidate will have any combination of education and experience equivalent to 60 semester hours with major work in police science or one of the social sciences and a total of five (5) years experience as a police officer.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:
Must successfully complete the Police Department physical; must be able to operate motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions; must be able to physically subdue and restrain an individual; sitting for extended periods of time; requires extensive walking, standing, running and frequent heavy lifting and pushing; requires working in adverse weather; flexible shift hours; (to include nights) and stressful and sometimes life threatening conditions; must carry a firearm and qualify at least annually with the weapon.

Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
