THE TOWN OF LOUISA IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR AN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC WORKS.

MAJOR PURPOSE OF THIS JOB: Assist the supervision of staff engaged in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s Cemeteries, water system, sewer system, streets and sidewalks, parks, buildings, department fleet and equipment, and other infrastructure and facilities.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to citizens’ requests and complaints and provides customer relations.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Supervises landscape installation and maintenance.
  • Supervises and performs construction and maintenance tasks related to the water and sewage system, streets, fences, benches, sidewalks, gutters, and storm drains.
  • Oversees and conducts preventative maintenance activities to ensure that mechanical equipment receives proper lubrication, overhauling, and inspection.
  • Oversees the cleaning and removal of litter from parks, streets, and other public areas.
  • Ensure proper procedures are used to flag traffic, as well as install and remove cones and barricades.
  • Maintains inventory of necessary system supplies and equipment.
  • Provide and delegate to ensure twenty-four (24) hour on-call coverage to respond to system emergencies.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role commands physical work requiring the exertion of up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently to move and load objects and some heavy work requiring exertion of up to seventy-five pounds of force occasionally. The work requires frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching above shoulders. Work is regularly performed in tight confines such as ditches, manholes, and vaults. Work requires frequent repetitive tasks using gross and fine motor skills of hands and feet (such as operating clutch, levers, and knobs). In addition, work is subject to adverse environmental conditions including extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibrations, hazards, etc.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of the function and organization of municipal government.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, town officials, contractors, and citizens.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and implement all applicable codes, manuals, rules, etc.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the proper operation of varied construction equipment, maintenance equipment, and work sites.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must hold a valid state department issued Driver’s License.
  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of motorized equipment.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Water and/or sewer experience preferred.
